October date set for terminal plan rejection challenge

The battle over plans for a new passenger terminal at Coventry Airport is set to move to London's High Court later this year, it was announced today. An appeal into a planning inqury's rejection on the plans, which could last weeks, has been scheduled for the first available date after 6 October. The ruling may not be known until early 2009.
Coventry Airport's owners have lodged an appeal against a government decision to block the expansion plans last year. The public inquiry concluded a new terminal would have an adverse impact on noise in the area and rejected the plans to build a permanent terminal capable of handling up to two million passenger a year.
The airport's owners claim that the decision was legally flawed, adding that they hope to resolve concerns about noise. Chris Orphanou, the airport's managing director, said that customers, MPs and firms wanting to invest in Coventry have urged him to appeal.
Mr Justice Wyn Williams scheduled the October date for the complex hearing, where the airport will raise 19 grounds to challenge the government's decision.
