Air museum celebrates 70th anniversary of jet flight
28.05.11
Iconic aircraft will take to the sky from Coventry Airport this weekend to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the world’s first jet flown by Sir Frank Whittle. The Airbase museum, home to 30 vintage planes, will host a celebration with a number of aviation activities over this bank holiday weekend.
It is 70 years since air commodore Sir Frank Whittle flew the Gloster Meteor, the first jet-powered aircraft. Tracey Owen, Airbase’s marketing manager, said: ‘Sir Frank was a genius, with the invention of the jet engine. There's no better place to celebrate this milestone than at the Airbase, the home of Europe’s largest privately owned jet fighter aircraft fleet.’
Visitors can board pleasure flights in a 1930s Dragon Rapide or Percival Prentice to experience the daredevil loop and barrel roll. There will also be face painting, bouncy castles and a children’s treasure hunt. The museum is open from 10:00 - 18:00 until Monday May 30.
