Hundreds watch WWII plane take off
26.04.07
Hundreds of people turned up to watch the UK's only flying Lancaster bomber take to the skies above Coventry Airport yesterday. The World War II plane took off on a test flight after almost 8 months of restoration.
Mechanics based at the airport stripped the plane down and gave it a complete mechanical overhaul, the first time this had been done by a civilian firm. The bomber is one of only two working Lancasters left in the world. The other is in Canada.
The plane is expected to fly to RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire tomorrow for the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. The bomber is due to fly along with 3 Spitfires and 2 Hurricanes.
