Terminal fight goes to High Court
Coventry Airport's 5 year fight for a permanent terminal enters a new phase this week when it reaches London's High Court. The airport's lawyers are to challenge a ruling made by Government inspectors last year that its proposed 10,000 sq ft facility should not receive planning permission.
Coventry Airport chief executive, Chris Orphanou, said: ‘I'm optimistic of a positive outcome. With expanded facilities we would be able to attract new airlines and offer a greater choice of destinations.’
If approved, the terminal would be capable of handling 2 million passengers a year, more than double the airport's current capacity. Planning permission was refused last year primarily on environmental grounds, following a campaign by nearby residents.
The hearing is expected to last 5 days, with a result not due until September. If the judge overturns the decision, a further inquiry will be held to decide whether the building should be granted permission.
