Over 30,000 cigarettes seized in 24 hour blitz
19.12.06
Customs officers seized over 30,000 cigarettes from passengers at Coventry Airport in a 24 hour blitz carried out earlier this month. A total of 33,900 cigarettes and just over 70 kilos of rolling tobacco were confiscated from just seven passengers who were trying to bring too much tobacco into the country. The duty evaded on the cigarettes was £5,600 and £7,921 on the tobacco.
Keith Morgan, Revenue & Customs detection manager at the airport, said: 'Most people keep to their legal entitlements but a minority of people will try to test or abuse the system. We will not stop in our efforts to disrupt and deter tobacco smuggling which robs the Treasury of some £3 billion a year in lost revenue, and which could be funding vital public services such as hospitals and schools.'
