Taxi drivers want access to Coventry airport
04.04.06
An over-reliance on private transport and a lack of taxis is giving passengers using Coventry Airport a headache, local taxi drivers claim.
Like many other airports, Coventry airport controls the taxis allowed to use the site because they own the airport roads. But this means that, although many cabbies have got licences to work in Warwick District - where the airport is located - they are unable to ply for trade at the airport.
The airport prevents cabs not employed by their contracted firm - Central Taxis - from plying for trade at their rank. According to one Kenilworth cabbie, that has caused a shortage of taxis, especially when busy flights arrive at Baginton.
But airport bosses say after changing the contract to Central in autumn last year, the situation has improved. Airport spokeswoman Sue Lindsay said they had had no complaints in recent months. She added that a queue of seven or eight taxis normally met busy flights and there was a free phone in case of a shortfall.
