coventry airport offers to keep passenger numbers below 1 million
01.02.05
Coventry Airport operators offered to cut passenger numbers to under a million a year in a last-minute deal with the planning authority yesterday.
The airport bosses' offer was aimed at avoiding a lengthy public inquiry, however, planning inspectors refused the offer, and the inquiry will continue as planned. The inquiry will ascertain whether or not the airport's temporary terminal at Baignton was built legally. Representatives from Coventry City Council, Warwickshire Wildlife Trust, and the Highways Agency will all have their chance to speak today.
Peter Village QC, in his opening statement for the airport, criticised the city council: 'It is a sad indictment of the council that the members have failed to recognise the real benefits the development will bring.'
The website www.IcCoventry.co.uk quoted Jeremy Cahill, QC for the council, as saying that the airport's offer was too late to be seriously considered: 'If planning permission is granted for the unauthorised development that has taken place at the airport, it will have a lasting impact on the lives of the local population.'
